  Facts about SC Braga
« em: 19 de Novembro de 2010, 20:50 »
In 1921, following a trip to Highbury by their then-coach Jozef Szabo, Braga changed their team shirts from two large green and white vertical stripes to Arsenal's red-and-white colours. Since then they have been known as Minho's Arsenalistas (Arsenal from Minho).
Because of this connection to the Gunners Braga also renamed their youth team 'Arsenal do Braga'.
Braga's home ground is the AXA Stadium, which was built for Euro 2004, it is also known as 'The Quarry' as it was carved from the Monte Castro quarry that overlooks the city of Braga. The stadium only has stands along the sides of the pitch as at one end is a wall of rock and at the other is an open view over the city.
Braga's biggest win in UEFA competition was a 5-0 victory over Hibernians in the UEFA Cup first round first leg in September 1978.
Braga's biggest European away win was 2-0 against FC Artmedia Petržalka in the UEFA Cup first round second leg in 2008.
Braga won the last ever UEFA Intertoto Cup in 2008.
Braga have yet to win their domestic league, but managed their best finish to a league season last season finishing runners-up to champions Benfica.
Braga qualified for the 2010-11 Champions League group stage in imressive style, knocking-out Celtic (4-2 on aggregate) and Sevilla (5-3 on aggregate).

It seems that it was not exactly like that. Have you checked "Correio do Minho" today?
José Antunes Guimarães, chairman of Braga in 1945, was the one that introduced the Arsenal shirts. His son challenges anyone to contradict that.

Legend says it was former hungarian coach Joseph Szabo who convinced Braga officials to change the team's outfit, after a trip to London where he attended Arsenal facilities for a training period. He first led our team in 1936 so I guess that change took place about then.

I have heard about Antunes Guimaraes that offered the jerseys to Braga. He travelled to London and he got all the gear there... But what has been written everywhere is Szabo...

Everybody seems to forget that Arsenal took the colours of Nottingham Forest around 1904 when a group Forest players moved to Arsenal and when the club did not have the finances to buy new jerseys they decided to take the colours of Nottingham Forest as ther own. The group approached their former team for spare jerseys and Nottingham Forest obliged.

Braga have the best record of any Portuguese team entering the Champions League group stages as a debutant with 9 points(to date) and in an age when money talks and more often the bigger teams dominate Braga have the best record of a debutant in the last five seasons. When Porto won the Champions League in 2004 they won 7 of their 13 games in which they kept a clean sheet in 5 of those games. This season Braga have won 6 of their 9 games keeping a clean sheet 5 times(Celtic 3-0, Sevilla 1-0, Partizan 2-0 and 1-0 and Arsenal 2-0)

Braga's Former goalkeeper went 543 minutes without conceeding a goal in the 2008/09 UEFA cup which is a record for one single season by a Portuguese goalkeeper in Europe. His run was finally ended by Ronaldihno in a 1-0 defeat away to AC Milan in which Ronaldinho scored a 25 cracker to the top left hand corner, a goal worthy of winning any game and ending Eduardo's amazing run.

Nope, that record is (still) held by Vítor Baía. Eduardo comes a close second and obviously, he eholds the record at Braga.
